Gallery Apel takes its name from the 140-year-old Apelyan Apartments, of which it occupies the lower two floors. Meaning appeal, call and invitation as well as attraction and being called, this name has been very well received. Some have even said that the gallery’s policies heve evolved in this direction. Certainly, with topics chosen from daily life for its exhibitions – examples are “the street-la strada”, “night”, “neighbors”, “weddings and celebrations”, “shop’n bazaar” – the gallery has striven to make current art part of everyday life, and it has become the haunt not only of the circle to which it attaches so much importance, but also for neighborhood children. It has continuously served students and art lovers, and earned a gratifying response in the process. Apel has also received “calls and invitations” from other locales of the world, holding exhibitions there when they came. Numerous artists have backed the gallery with their works since 1998, and now once again, with an exhibition entitled “my name is apel”-“je m’appelle apel”, have foregathered under the apel umbrella with fresh takes on a common theme. In September this exhibition will spread out to three locations; one the Tobacco Warehouse near the Center For The Handicapped in Tophane, and another the French Cultural Center as the head of İstiklal Caddesi. Meanwhile our space at Apel, on Hayriye Caddesi, will host a solo show by Canan Pak. curator: Nuran Terzioğlu
